Welcome to my channel. I'm Ian and this is where I share my mountain biking adventures - mostly in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, but sometimes further afield. I have authored two mountain bike guide books (one for the Lakes & one for the Dales) and some of the videos I post may offer inspiration or suggestions of fun routes that people may want to try for themselves.

The blue trail is around 5.5 miles long and I think is a suitable introduction to mountain biking for near beginners. Nothing particularly technical and only a modest amount of climbing. Only just seen this video mate, Alice did really well. Excellent 🙂
Ha, cheers mate
Nice video mate 👍
Cheers dude
Welcome back and thanks for another video , I had my longest mtb ride at 47 miles from seacombe along the coast past hoylake and down the Wirral way to neston with a nice cafe (nets cafe) then the wales border was only another mile so I visited that so can say I’ve cycled into another country 🤣 and back , was flat but windy
Think I've done part of that about ten years ago. Nice coastline
@@Lakedistrictrider yeah great views over the water to wales it was a sunny clear day so that helped
@@252Scooby The Wirral always seems to be windy. Especially along the prom
We rely on you for trail experiences, I think you owe it to your viewers to give the river crossing a go 😅
@@nazcaman ha, maybe after a drought
great ride ian and good to show sandwich of the day
Cheers
your daughter frozen in time , great memories to watch back in the future for you both
Cheers mate, definitely.
We just did this ride with the help of your book, we slightly modified the route as we were on E bikes I started at Stile end and rode over to Sadgill where Imet the other two then went up and over Gatescarth > along side of Haweswater >Swindale> Mosedale and the bothy > Gatescarth > Sadgill> then finally I climbed back into Kentmere and Stile end, epic ride thank you 😀 ps very hard to see where to go over Mosedale with rain and a headwind and boggy A F in places
Yeah ideally it's best left to prolonged dry period and this year's been wetter than most! Hope you enjoyed the adventure
@@Lakedistrictrider the bracken down to Swindale was above our heads you couldn't see the floor .. videos on my channel ..3 retired guys with the oldest being 77 years old... We all thoroughly enjoyed it .I've done Gatescarth on a permit day on motorbike so I knew what to expect .Your guide helped us tremendously on the other bits tho :-)
@@kryten1021 @kryten1021 great to hear of older guys still going strong. That Swindale descent is better in Spring when the Bracken's low. Check out my vid on the Old Corpse Rd from five years ago. That goes over that way without bracken
Great video , how long would it take for an average joe to ride the north trail loop ?
@@crosscustomsracing2848 ta, at a guess around an hour and a half. Depends on experience and fitness
So I did this today as I was inspired from your video and glad I finally did it , has a great time really enjoyed it liked it so much I did two laps in about 75 mins . It was nice and quiet on the trials
Great stuff, glad you enjoyed it. The Blue trail was really quiet for us too. I think the red gets more traffic
@@Lakedistrictrider yes and the machine at the car park wasn’t working so free parking 🅿️
Brilliant video m8 just what I was after, looking to take the kids on the weekend; similar age to Alice and my 10 year old’s riding ability is like hers so really good insight into what’s in store for them and if it’s something he can handle. It’s all about making these core memories. 😍👍🏽
Great to hear it's useful mate. Hope you have a good day on the bikes
Great video there thanks How much is it for the blue route ? Can’t find a price cheers
Just pay for parking. No cost to ride the trails
Ok great thanks for the reply & info. That’s probably why I couldn’t find the price because there isn’t one lol . Cafe says 4pm close but not sure what time the trail closes I’m guessing before sunset 🌅 is it possible to do two laps on blue route in 1hr ? Looks like fun it’s about time u try it out
@@252Scoobyi don't think the trails close. The car parks might, but unsure. Don't think I could do two laps in one hour. At Alice's pace our moving time was 1hr 15mins
Hope it was cheese and brown onion ice cream!! 😂 Well done Alice!!!
Haha, now that would be an ice cream flavour to remember! 😂
Blowing there mate? ha ha
Haha
Making memories she’ll never forget ❤. I have such fond memories of bike rides with my dad as a kid. There’s something about dad and daughter adventures 😊 and he cemented my love of cycling for sure.
Aw, certainly hope so ❤
great progression. The difference in her riding from the start to the finish was amazing. Well done
Cheers mate. Confidence definitely improved as things went on
Man, i haven't been on the bike in ages and this has given me the itch. Might get out this weekend. I missed a few of your videos, good to see the sandwich of the day section is still included 😊
Cheers mate. I'm finding life a bit busy for getting out regularly but really enjoyed this ride!
Hi ian, i cant work out your route down into seathwaite? Im looking to start in coniston, down to torver, thru woods around the knott and bridleway along long mire to goats crag then down to seathwaite. Im up there next month, i also bought your book, i have planned a few rides out of it already but it doesnt include the walna scar?
Yeah the Walna Scar isn't in my book. I think that day I went around Raven's Crag instead of up Long Mire before doing the bridleway North to Seathwaite via The Park Head Road. Good luck, cracking riding around there.
Share GPX?
Hi mate, i thought the summit of ingleborough was footpaths only ?
No mate, there's a bridleway that goes right to the top from Ingleton. Check out the OS map
Looks like an ace ride that 👌🏻 love the peaks takin my bike on the train at the weekend to go do the beast, did the back end track of mam tor 2 weeks ago that was fun
Have you got this route saved somewhere? I recently moved close to whitbarrow. Got your book but would love to check this one out close to home.
That route is similar to one in the VG guidebook. But also here strava.app.link/ChEYNpJOKJb

Did some of that route, enjoyed the close look at the wildflowers, good time of year didn't know you could eat the wild garlic raw. Would revisit, recognise some bits not orhers.
Great time of year for the wildflowers. Some lovely unspoilt woodland down there.
Nice video mate. I was riding around Whitbarrow yesterday.
Good video thanks. I've done a short frying pan route from Raven's Lodge a couple of times on my hardtail, continuing south on the bridleway towards the Derby Arms after the dodgy descent above Halecat. Cumbrian e-bikes do a variation on your route missing out the Halecat section but then include the bridleways south of Brigsteer up onto the Helsington ridge beyond the church. All of it a lovely area.
Thanks mate. Will have to try the bit down to the Derby Arms some time
Such a beautiful view what is this trail called is it just Ennerdale trail or what is the car park called please
I think the car park might be called Bowness Knott. The car park is just next to a hill called Bowness Knott. Then you just follow the track east along the lake and up the valley. Worth having a look on an OS map but pretty easy to find your way up the valley
I live in Glasson Dock, been up and down that track more times than i care to remember 🙂 I always travel to the Lakes and Dales for my rides nowadays, have done for the past 20 years. Such a shame theres not much to do around here. Have you ever done Ouster Rake in the Trough???
I've not mate. Heard it's pretty precipitous
It is indeed, seems a bit out of place in the Trough, more like something you would come across on the 4 passes. Makes an okay xc type ride incorporating Whitendale,Dunsop fell, and skirting Totridge👍
@@jameslamb7085 hope to do it sometime. After a prolonged dry spell
Hi again just letting you know I finally did salter fell yesterday after years of getting round to it. It was harder than I thought it would be but did it from wray 1h40 out and 1h10 back , fantastic views. Loved the middle of nowhere vibe took it easy as it was tricky in places stepped off few times , it was a hard tail but yeah a full suspension would have been more comfortable. Found it easier coming back despite the head wind
Glad you enjoyed it
Did I hear you right? Family friendly psychopath 😂
"cycle path", I hope ha
Thanks for another video , nice easy flat one why not , I sometimes after arriving at glasson is head inland on the canal path , abit bumpy but it’s ok . Then a left at galgate and back into Lancaster via the canal . Bless I have two girls but there not interested in cycling
Yeah I like going down the canal and coming back on the estuary track, but it's a bit too slippy for the kids right now. I came off under one of the bridges once and almost went in the canal
If you're ever down in Devon, you should try Dartmoor. It's beautiful going up to the reservoir. Lots of uphill, mind.
I don't get down south very often but I've driven through part of Dartmoor once and it looked lovely. I'd certainly like to explore it more
Another cracking Video. We're up in the moors and Dales of Yorkshire later this year near Masham so might have to look at this one. Did you say there was a Komoot link?
Nope, sorry I don't use Komoot

I was shattered but enjoyed it
Cheers mate. That's a big one. I did that on a road bike once. When I was much fitter!
@@Lakedistrictrider cheers bud yeah it was on the road bike , it was the limit and wouldn’t do it again 😂 very tricky going down steep roeburndale through the gates when it was slippy & thick fog
@@252Scooby I used to prefer Cross O Greet going in the other direction. Tough climbing out of Slaidburn though
@@Lakedistrictrider now I’ve watched the whole video I can relate as three miles before the end my left crank just fell off !! Going up towards jubilee so had to walk two miles to top then like u I just free rolled down towards the car nearby however going down the steep part of that road was dangerous with only one peddle and hanging on !
I'm pleased it wasn't that busy when I did it (02/05/23). There were 2 folk at the top and I met 3 people on the way down.. Mega ride, I did it from Cow Green reservoir.
i want to do this route today as i live in caton how do u get to the starting point
From Caton climb from Brook House by the pub up Littledale Rd, and then Roeburndale Rd. It's a long climb. Then turn right near the end of that road to descend a bridleway. Keep following that bridleway to end up in Roeburndale. Turn R at a T junction l and follow that lane which turns into the Hornby Road after a farm
Do you have a gpx for this route ? please
